2 5/8" Cross-Grooved Stone Amulet - Maryland - Ex James Shield Collection
A well-crafted cross-grooved stone amulet fashioned from a dense reddish-brown fine-grained stone and reportedly recovered in Maryland. The artifact measures approximately 2¾ inches in length and exhibits a highly symmetrical spindle-shaped form with rounded terminals and a carefully executed groove system consisting of a circumferential groove around the midsection intersected by a longitudinal groove running the length of the body. The intersecting grooves divide the surface into four raised quadrants, creating a distinctive three-dimensional form unlike that seen on more common grooved stone weights.
The stone displays a mottled reddish-brown coloration with areas of lighter weathering and subtle mineral inclusions throughout the matrix. The raised surfaces retain a smooth, developed polish, while the recessed grooves exhibit the same age-consistent patina found across the remainder of the artifact. The material appears dense and durable, allowing the piece to retain its crisp contours and well-defined groove pattern despite considerable age.
Considerable workmanship is evident throughout the object. The body expands gradually from both ends toward the center before being interrupted by the intersecting groove system. Both grooves are evenly executed and carefully integrated into the overall design, indicating that they were intended as a primary feature of the artifact rather than a secondary modification. The resulting form is balanced and highly symmetrical, reflecting deliberate planning and skilled manufacture.
Condition is very good overall, with scattered handling marks, minor abrasions, and age-consistent wear present throughout the surface. An old impact scar is present on one side and exhibits coloration and weathering consistent with the remainder of the piece. The amulet remains intact and retains its original form and strong visual appeal.
The material, workmanship, surface polish, and complex intersecting groove arrangement are all consistent with an authentic prehistoric stone amulet. Examples displaying both circumferential and longitudinal grooves are uncommon and reflect a significant investment of labor in both design and execution. The strong symmetry and carefully planned groove system suggest an ornamental, symbolic, or ceremonial purpose rather than purely utilitarian use.
No repairs or restoration are evident.
