Lot 128:
Pre-Columbian Mayan Crescentiform Effigy - 3 3/4 Inches
A bifacially flaked crescentiform effigy measuring approximately 3 3/4 inches. The piece shows deep curvature approaching a circular form, with a serrated outer edge and a smooth inner curve. Both faces display controlled bifacial flaking, with consistent flake scars visible across the surface. The artifact is non-utilitarian in form and represents a symbolic or ritual crescent type rather than a functional blade.
Patination correctness: The surface shows excellent patination, with uniform color development and natural dulling consistent with long-term age. No fresh breaks or modern tool marks are visible. The coloration ranges from pinkish tan to light brown with natural mottling and inclusions.
Surface analysis: The surface exhibits a matte finish with natural weathering. Small pits, speckling, and mineral inclusions are present across both faces. The serrated outer edge shows deliberate flake removals, while the inner curve remains smooth and unmodified. No grinding or polishing is visible.
Manufacture correctness: The artifact was produced through bifacial percussion flaking, shaping the crescent form and creating the serrated outer arc. The extreme curvature and bifacial workmanship indicate symbolic or ceremonial intent rather than utilitarian use.
Overall: An outstanding example of its type, showing excellent preservation, strong patination, and highly skilled bifacial craftsmanship.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
