Lot 129:
Pre-Columbian Mayan Crescentiform Effigy - 3 Inches
A crescentiform effigy measuring a little over 3 inches. The piece shows deep curvature approaching a circular form, with a smooth inner arc and a worked outer arc. Both faces display bifacial flaking, with controlled flake scars visible across the surface. The artifact is non-utilitarian in form and represents a symbolic or ritual crescent type rather than a functional blade.
Patination correctness: The surface shows excellent patination, with uniform color development and natural dulling consistent with long-term age. No fresh breaks or modern tool marks are visible. The coloration ranges from light tan to beige with natural mottling and mineral inclusions.
Surface analysis: The surface exhibits a matte finish with natural weathering. Small pits, crystalline texture, and mineral inclusions are present across both faces. The curvature is smooth and continuous, with bifacial flake scars visible along the outer arc. No grinding or polishing is visible.
Manufacture correctness: The artifact was produced through bifacial percussion flaking, shaping the crescent form and refining the outer arc. The extreme curvature and bifacial workmanship indicate symbolic or ceremonial intent rather than utilitarian use.
Overall: An outstanding example of its type, showing excellent preservation, strong patination, and skilled bifacial craftsmanship.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
