Pre-Columbian Carved Sandstone Plaque Depicting a Stylized Supernatural Figure
6" Pre-Columbian Carved Sandstone Plaque Depicting a Stylized Supernatural Figure
Rectangular carved sandstone plaque measuring approximately 6 in. x 4.75 in. and about 0.5 in. thick, featuring a carefully executed symmetrical composition rendered in shallow incised lines. The imagery centers on a stylized anthropomorphic face with almond-shaped eyes and a tapered lower feature, flanked by flowing avian- and serpentine-like elements and paired circular motifs filled with crosshatched decoration.
Manufactured from a dense fine-grained sandstone displaying an even aged surface, mineral oxidation, and well-developed natural patination. The carving was executed through broad, shallow incisions rather than relief carving, with the grooves exhibiting coloration and weathering consistent with the surrounding stone surface. Geological characteristics include a compact sandstone matrix with mottled tan and brown coloration and naturally weathered textures throughout.
Condition is good, showing expected age-related surface wear, softened edges, minor abrasions, and accumulated patination. The composition displays strong indigenous symbolic imagery and appears to depict a stylized supernatural being incorporating anthropomorphic, avian, and serpentine characteristics within a balanced ceremonial design. No visible repairs or restorations observed. An attractive carved sandstone plaque with strong visual presence and distinctive Pre-Columbian iconography.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
