Lot 176:
Slate Platform Pipe Pendant - Ohio, 2" x 1 3/8" (Dr James Shield Collection)
This piece is the salvaged base of an Ohio banded slate platform pipe that was broken in antiquity and repurposed into a pendant. The original horizontal stem bore remains intact, showing correct hand-drilled interior polish and authentic wear. After the bowl section broke away, two smaller suspension holes were added and the fracture edge was intentionally smoothed for reuse as an ornament. The slate displays natural banding, proper hand-ground surfaces, and mineral-embedded patination consistent with Ohio Valley slate. Measures 2 inches long and 1 3/8 inches tall. From the James Shield Collection.
