Lot 243:
3" Butterfly-Form Slate Bannerstone found near Hagerstown, Maryland - Ex James F. Shields Collection
3" x 2 1/2" slate bannerstone found near Hagerstown, Maryland. The piece shows correct prehistoric ground-stone shaping with a compact winged form and naturally softened edges. The perforation is straight-drilled in a single direction and presents as round in the straight-on view, with interior wall abrasion and patination consistent with ancient manufacture. The inner wall shows irregular prehistoric wear rather than modern rotary scoring, and the aged matte coloration continues uniformly down the hole. Surface patination is stable and appropriate for a prehistoric ground-stone artifact from the Upper Potomac drainage. Ex James F. Shields Collection, Paxtang, Pennsylvania.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
