Han Dynasty Cobalt Blue Glass Capstan Bead circa 206 BC-220 AD
Han Dynasty Cobalt Blue Glass Capstan Bead
Large capstan-form glass bead of deep cobalt-blue coloration, measuring approximately 5/8 in. in length and slightly over 1/2 in. at its widest diameter. The bead exhibits the classic spool-shaped profile with flared ends and a constricted waist characteristic of Han Dynasty capstan beads, which are often identified as ear ornaments or ear spools. Related examples have also been reported from Japan and Korea. The perforation is centrally aligned and remains intact. Surfaces display extensive iridescent weathering, mineral accretions, pitting, and glass decomposition consistent with long-term burial. Rich cobalt-blue glass remains visible beneath the weathered exterior. Condition is good overall with expected ancient surface wear, weathering, and burial-related encrustation. A well-preserved example of an ancient East Asian glass capstan bead dating to the Han Dynasty period, circa 206 BC-220 AD.
