Lot 343:
9 1/2 Inch Fossil Mastodon Molar
9 1/2 Inch Fossil Mastodon Molar
Large fossil mastodon molar measuring 9 1/2 inches in length, preserving prominent chewing surfaces, substantial root structure, and extensive attached geological matrix.
The specimen exhibits dense mineralized dental material with well-defined enamel and dentine visible across the occlusal surface. Dark gray, brown, cream, and tan coloration highlights the natural anatomy and fossilization of this prehistoric proboscidean tooth. Distinct enamel bands and worn grinding surfaces remain clearly defined, illustrating the functional structure of the molar.
The root portion displays robust fossilized dental architecture with preserved root projections emerging from the surrounding matrix. Areas of natural sediment adhesion and mineral deposits remain attached throughout the specimen, contributing to its scientific and display appeal.
Geological features include mineral staining, sediment infilling, and natural variation in color and texture across both the tooth and matrix. These characteristics reflect the fossilization process and enhance the specimen’s visual interest.
Condition shows ancient wear to the chewing surface together with natural weathering and mineralization. Preserved enamel structure, exposed dentine, fossilized roots, and attached matrix create a striking presentation from multiple viewing angles. Evidence of stabilization is present in portions of the root area, a common conservation measure employed to preserve fossil material.
The specimen exhibits preserved enamel structure, mineralized dental material, fossilized root development, and attached geological matrix. Fossil mastodon teeth are among the most recognizable North American Ice Age fossils and are sought after by collectors of prehistoric mammals, vertebrate fossils, and Pleistocene material.
