Lot 216:
900 to 600 BCE Painted Ceramic Vessel from the Mediterranean Region - Ex Paul Potter Collection
This hand formed ceramic vessel features a rounded body, short neck, and two small loop handles positioned high on the shoulder. The exterior displays vertical painted bands in dark pigment with simple rectangular geometric elements. The clay body is buff tan in color, and the paint appears mineral based. One side shows a firmly adhered mineral accretion with a rough, layered texture consistent with long term soil contact. Based on visible features alone, the vessel aligns with Old World ceramic traditions from the Mediterranean region and appears consistent with early historic pottery dating approximately 900 to 600 BCE. The pot measures approximately 6 1/4 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches in diameter and comes from the late Paul Potter collection. Surface Analysis – The surface shows a naturally granular mineral buildup firmly bonded to the exterior, consistent with calcareous soil exposure found in Mediterranean environments. Pigment wear and rim abrasion align with extended age. The handles show correct hand formed shaping with smooth transitions into the body. The painted motifs are fully patinated with no signs of modern repainting. The puncture at the base shows mineral infill and weathering consistent with long term age rather than recent damage. Overall surface condition aligns with correct hand manufacture and extended historical use or burial. Ex Paul Potter Collection
