The ancient fossil shrimp Acanthotelson stimpsoni is a small syncarid crustacean discovered in the famous Mazon Creek fossil beds of Illinois, dating back about 307–309 million years to the Pennsylvanian epoch of the Carboniferous period. It is one of the earliest known shrimp-like arthropods, preserved in remarkable detail inside ironstone concretions. Measures 3 1/4". Both sides of the stone nodule that hold the fossil. Ex Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. "HA" stands for the Hoard Anderson collection, one of the largest private collections of Mazon Creek fossils that was donated to the museum. Hoard donated his collection in 1978. At some point since then the Museum deaccessioned much of his collection to raise money for museum projects.
