Lot 291:
9 1/2" English Black Glass Wine Bottle circa 1760-1800
9 1/2 in. English Black Glass Wine Bottle c. 1760-1800
Measures approximately 9 1/2 inches in height. Hand-blown dark olive-black glass wine bottle with cylindrical body, rounded shoulders, tapered neck, applied string rim finish, and kicked base. The bottle exhibits the subtle asymmetry and irregular proportions associated with eighteenth century free-blown manufacture, with variations in contour and profile not found in later machine-made examples.
The glass appears nearly black under normal lighting yet transmits a rich olive-green color when illuminated, a characteristic feature of early English black glass. The surface retains light weathering, scattered iridescence, and age-related character developed over centuries. The base displays a pronounced kick-up, while the applied finish remains intact and well formed.
The elongated body profile represents the evolution of English wine bottle forms from the earlier onion bottle tradition into the taller cylindrical examples favored during the latter half of the eighteenth century. The dark glass coloration, hand-worked finish, kicked base, and free-blown construction are consistent with English wine bottles of the Revolutionary War era.
An attractive and complete eighteenth century black glass bottle possessing excellent display presence, desirable olive-black coloration, and strong evidence of early hand-made manufacture throughout.
